Practice Embedding Quotes - Detail Sentences!
Read the following quotes from "Kindness:"
"How you ride and ride/thinking the bus will never stop, /the passengers eating maize and chicken/will stare out the window forever."
"You must see how this could be you,/ how he too was someone/ who journeyed through the night with plans/ and the simple breath that kept him alive."
"Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside, / you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing."
"Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore..."
As a small group, write a sentence that successfully integrates at least 3 quotes from above into your own sentence structure. Write this sentence on a plain sheet of paper to project for the class.
Example: In her description of the French shop owner's "offering," Ascher noted that many other business owners would have "[chased him] from their midst," using "expletives and threats" in order to "rid" themselves of the "troublesome presence" of the homeless (par. 8-9).
Argument!
I will divide you up into Brudnicki and Nye groups. You will not know which side you are on until I pull you into the middle- so make sure both of your arguments are sound. I will bring you into the middle to argue your side of the question. The rest of the class will vote on the group that made the best points, used the best evidence, and explained their points the best.
Outlining
Using all of the texts we have read this quarter:
"Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes
"We are the World" by Michael Jackson and Lyonel Richie
"Material Girl" by Madonna
"On Compassion" by Barbera Ascher
"Kindness" by Naomi Shihab Nye
"Homeless Parking Lot Feedings Spark Controversy" by Amber Southard
Outline your argument on the essential question, "Is it our moral obligation to practice philanthropy?" Gather text evidence from at least 3 sources supporting your own points.
